Eco-friendly interior design ideas
Eco-friendly interior design ideas

The number of people pursuing a more sustainable lifestyle is on the rise. From making the switch to electric vehicles to closing the door on fast fashion, there are many ways that individuals are looking to overhaul their lives to lessen their environmental impact. This trend extends to all aspects of life, including how individuals decorate their homes. This begs the question: How can we embrace the sustainability ethos when it comes to the interior design of our homes? If you’re contemplating home decoration, here are some eco-friendly interior design ideas:

  1. Houseplant galore: Filling your eco-friendly home with houseplants is a no-brainer. Not only do they offer a natural aesthetic that aligns with a sustainable interior, but they also help to cleanse the air. Do your research before you decide which plants to settle on, as different plants have different benefits. Also – bear in mind that some plants are toxic for pets. If you’re the proud owner of a four-legged friend, avoid plants such as the rubber plant or aloe vera.
  2. Use natural materials: Another way to boost the sustainable nature of your home is by using natural materials rather than their synthetic counterparts. When it comes to rugs, for instance, opt for a natural sheepskin rug or cowhide over a rug made from synthetic fibres.
  3. Buy second-hand: A high-quality wooden wardrobe bought from an antique supplier or vintage store is a far better investment than a flat-packed alternative. It’s stood the test of time, and purchasing a pre-loved piece of furniture means you’re not buying an item that’s been mass-produced in a factory whose manufacturing processes contribute to increased carbon emissions.
  4. Install energy-efficient technology: Nowadays, there is a whole range of technologies available on the market that help to monitor and reduce our energy usage. For example, smart meters tell us more about the energy we use, giving us the information we need to make better decisions regarding our use of gas and electricity. Additionally, household items such as lightbulbs can be upgraded for more energy-efficient versions, like LED bulbs.
  5. Opt for a timeless look: We get it; trends come and go, and it’s difficult not to want to overhaul your interior design once a new style emerges. However, frequently updating our furnishings and interiors is an unsustainable way to live. To avoid the temptation to do this, opt for a minimalist and timeless look, as it’s far more likely to go out of fashion a few years down the line.
